About the 1982–1991 Ford Crown Victoria

A Ford Crown Victoria from the generation archive from the generation archive

The 1982-1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria is the boxy, full-size Ford built on the rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame Panther platform shared with the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Town Car. It wore the LTD Crown Victoria name, which had debuted for the 1980 model year as the top full-size Ford trim; this page covers the 1982-1991 years of that run. Through these years the LTD Crown Victoria used pushrod Windsor V8s: the 5.0L (302) was the mainstream engine, with the larger 5.8L (351 Windsor) reserved mainly for fleet, police, and export use. The 5.0L moved to fuel injection during the 1980s, gaining sequential multiport fuel injection that lifted output, and the AOD four-speed overdrive automatic was the standard transmission. Body styles included a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon, the latter offered as the wood-trimmed LTD Country Squire; the two-door sedan was dropped after 1987. For 1988 Ford gave the car a mid-cycle refresh with rounded fascias and integrated bumpers while keeping the upright body. The police package carried the internal order code P72. After a shortened 1991 model year, the LTD Crown Victoria was replaced for 1992 by the restyled Ford Crown Victoria, which dropped the LTD prefix and the station wagon and used the 4.6L V8.

The story

The ugliest yellow I have ever seen. Paid $400 for it in 2003 when I saw it sit neglected in a local used car dealers lot. I finally investigatedit one day only to find that an old man traded it in on a ford escort. One owner, never smoked in, immaculte in and out 89k mile car. Perfect material for me to work with! — RReed189
