About the 1992–1996 Ford F-150

A Ford F-150 from the generation archive from the generation archive

The 1992 model year brought the ninth-generation Ford F-Series, a restyle of the existing cab that gave the truck a smoother, more rounded front end that Ford literature and enthusiasts call the "Aeronose." Collectors group the 1992-1996 F-150 with the 1987-1991 trucks under the label "OBS," short for Old Body Style, because both share the same basic cab that ran from 1987 through 1996. The 1992 Ford F-150 carried over the powertrain mix of the previous trucks: the 300-cubic-inch (4.9L) inline-six as the base engine, with the 5.0L (302) and 5.8L (351 Windsor) V8s optional, all electronically fuel injected. The Flareside stepside bed returned to the lineup for 1992 after being absent from the half-ton range. For 1994 the Ford F-150 gained a standard driver-side airbag, a center high-mount stop lamp above the rear window, and side-door intrusion beams. The 1992-1996 generation was the last to offer the 300 inline-six, which was dropped after the 1996 model year. The 1992-1996 F-150 4x4 kept the Twin-Traction Beam independent front suspension built around a Dana 44 front axle, the layout used from 1980 through 1996. The performance variant of this generation was the first-generation SVT Lightning, built for 1993 through 1995 with a tuned 5.8L (351 Windsor) V8.
